About Malavika Prasad

Academic Title

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics

Biography/ Philosophy of Care

Malavika Prasad, M.D., joined Norton Children’s in August 2020 as a pediatric nephrologist. In addition to her clinical role, she is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

She has special interest in many aspects of kidney diseases, from glomerulonephritis (group of diseases that injure the part of the kidney that filters blood) to kidney transplantation. Acute care nephrology is her key interest. She eagerly monitors innovative modern advances, including Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System.

Dr. Prasad graduated from Stanley Medical College with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2011. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Maimonides Children’s Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, in 2016, and then finished her fellowship in pediatric nephrology at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital in 2019.

During her training, she earned multiple awards. In 2016, Dr. Prasad was the recipient of the best overall research award from Maimonides Children’s Hospital.

Her fellowship scholarly project was investigating kidney diseases and complications in pediatric patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation, a clinical field in which she remains actively involved.

Dr. Prasad, who loved biology in school, developed an interest in the pathophysiology of diseases. Coupled with her desire to help those who are sick, she quickly cemented her interest in medicine. She views nephrology as an opportunity to improve the outcomes of chronic conditions for children with kidney problems and has a passion finding answers to the complexities of various related illnesses.

Dr. Prasad is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in general pediatrics and pediatric nephrology. She is a member of multiple national and international organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, National Kidney Foundation, and the International Pediatric Nephrology Association.

When not with her patients, she excitedly spends time with her daughter. Dr. Prasad enjoys biking, hiking, painting, baking and gardening, while listening to her daughter’s “mind-blowing” solutions to solve worldly issues.
