Biography/ Philosophy of Care

Dr John Berkenbosch is a Professor of Pediatrics/Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, providing Pediatric Critical Care services within the “Just For Kids” Critical Care Center at Norton Children’s hospital.  In addition, he serves as Director of Operations for the Division of Pediatric Critical Care. He joined the faculty at the University of Louisville in 2004 after practicing for 5 years at the University of Missouri-Columbia.



Dr, Berkenbosch is nationally recognized as an expert in pediatric procedural sedation with multiple publications relating to sedation practices, particularly novel uses of procedural sedation medications and regimens.  He is one of the original founders of the Pediatric Sedation Research Consortium, a multicenter, multidisciplinary consortium whose primary aim has been to advance sedation practices in children.  He was also a founding member of the Society for Pediatric Sedation, served on its Board of Directors for 6 years, and served as program coordinator for the 2009 Society for Pediatric Sedation Annual Conference. He has given numerous invited lectures regarding pediatric procedural sedation nationally.



He currently also serves as co-chair for the American College of Critical Care Medicine’s Task Force developing guidelines for sedation and analgesia in critically ill children. Dr. Berkenbosch’s research interests have primarily focused on pediatric procedural sedation and implementation of technology advances in Pediatric Critical Care and have resulted in 57 publications as well as several book chapters. He has and continues to be an active mentor multiple medical students, residents and fellows in their own scholarly activities.  He currently serves on the Editorial Boards of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and Pediatric Drugs.



He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Society of Critical Care Medicine and Society for Pediatric Sedation.  In 2007 he received the prestigious distinction of Fellow of Critical Care Medicine from the American College of Critical Care Medicine
