Biography/ Philosophy of Care

Dr. Dan L. Stewart joined the University of Louisville Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine in 1988.  He recently received a 30-year Certificate of Recognition from the University.  Presently, he is serving a 6-year tenure on the Committee on Fetus and Newborn (CoFN) which just published the 8th Edition of Perinatal Guidelines.  He has served as the President of the KY Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and established the KY Pediatric Society Foundation (403-C).  In addition, he Chairs the Pediatricians Advocacy in KY (PAK Committee).  Previously, he served on the National Nominating Committee which he chaired during the third year of his tenure.  Also, he served as the EHDI (Early Hearing Detection and Intervention) Champion for KY from its inception until 2016.  He has received the Marion Downs Award for his dedication to infants born with sensorineural hearing loss.  He has been recognized by the AAP with multiple service awards.



Dr. Stewart has authored > 100 manuscripts and book chapters.  He has served as the PI or Co-PI on many research studies.  He has served as an ad hoc reviewer for many neonatal-perinatal journals.  Dr. Stewart has received multiple teaching awards from East Tennessee State University and the University of Louisville.  He has been selected as a “Top Doc” in Louisville for the past 10 years, as well as being recognized as Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare.   He has received honorary doctorates from Iasi, Romania and Quito, Ecuador where he is an invited international speaker on a yearly basis.  He has lead international medical missions to Poland, Romania, Moldova, Viet Nam, Ghana, and Ecuador.

Clinical/Research Interests:

Clinical: Management of patients with persistent pulmonary hypertension, non-traditional treatment of jaundice (heme oxygenase inhibitors), surfactants and delivery devices, patient safety, and stewardship of various pharmacological agents.

Research: Neonatal clinical pharmacology, inhaled nitric oxide and other pulmonary vasodilators, surfactants and non-invasive delivery methods, NAVA (neurally adjusted ventilatory assist), as well as non-invasive use of NAVA.
